A new network aimed at building meaningful partnerships between primary schools and local businesses launched in the East Riding, marking a pivotal step in embedding real-world learning and early career inspiration into primary education.

Headteachers from across the East Riding met with business leaders at this inaugural event to explore how real-life career pathways, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), can be introduced meaningfully into the curriculum for younger children.

The event, facilitated by UKSTEM, marks the beginning of an ambitious new network designed to raise aspirations from the earliest stages of education, by helping children see how what they learn in school connects to the world beyond the classroom.

Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education said: “I’ve always believed that when schools and businesses work together, amazing things can happen for our young people. It’s great to see this kind of collaboration taking shape, helping children connect what they learn in the classroom with real-world opportunities. This is exactly the kind of partnership that can raise aspirations and build a stronger future for the East Riding.”

Merlin Joseph, executive director for children, families and schools said: “The presence and support of local businesses was especially valuable, offering practical insights and pathways that could spark long-term interest and ambition among our young learners.

“Thank you to the UKSTEM team for setting up this network and organising this event, and I hope we can continue building on the momentum to develop further partnerships between schools and industry, and ensure that all of our children have access to a broad, relevant, and future-facing education.”

Mike Cargill, Managing Director, UKSTEM said: "It is so important for schools to connect and work more with local businesses.  This not only supports teachers in delivering contextualised learning to pupils but helps young learners to visualise the opportunities and careers in our regions and raise aspirations. For businesses, its a chance to have a positive impact on education and inspire their future work force."

Any business interested in getting involved should contact Mike Cargill and Sally Richardson at UKSTEM via info@ukstem.uk or post16@eastriding.gov.uk.
