Inspirational: Allam Medical Building wins Guardian University award

The Allam Medical Building, at the heart of the University of Hull’s £28-million health campus, has been announced as a winner in The Guardian’s University Awards 2018.

The awards are designed to recognise universities that transform communities and inspire students.

Professor Julie Jomeen, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Hull, said:

The Guardian awards celebrate the very best in the University sector. I am delighted that the University’s investment in the Allam Medical Building and all that it represents – in terms of providing inspirational facilities for our students; our contribution to the health of the region; and our life-changing research – has been recognised in this way.

Professor Jomeen paid tribute to all staff and students who had contributed to the planning and the delivery of the remarkable building and its facilities.

The University’s Chief Finance Officer, Stephen Willis, said:

This is an incredible achievement. For the Allam Medical Building to win such a prestigious award is a credit to everyone who has made the vision of this inspirational building become a reality.

The University’s Estates team and many members of the Faculty of Health Sciences have lived and breathed this project and have worked closely with University staff, students and members of our alumni community to ensure that the design of our flagship facility meets the needs of our students by providing them with the best opportunities and training to deliver the healthcare of the future.

The building, which was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in November last year, achieved success in the Buildings That Inspire category, announced at an awards ceremony in London last night.

The University of Hull was one of three finalists in this category, alongside Newcastle University and Norwich University of the Arts.

The Allam Medical Building has transformed the way that the University is teaching the next generation of health professionals, inspiring the midwives, nurses, allied health professionals and doctors that will be the backbone of the NHS and other healthcare organisations.

The building provides a simulated learning environment  – including a hospital ward, operating theatre, endoscopy unit, midwifery-led birthing unit, high dependency unit and resuscitation unit – that enables students to train in a real life setting, giving them the skills and confidence to transition effectively into clinical practice.

The Allam Medical Building has also been shortlisted for three other awards this year. The marketing and media campaign for the opening of the building by Her Majesty The Queen has been shortlisted in the public sector category of the 2018 PR Moments Awards. The transformation in the student experience for the next generation of health professionals in the Allam Medical Building has been shortlisted in the Educate North Awards 2018, which recognise best practice and excellence in the education sector in the north of England.

The building has already won a Chartered Institute of Building: Committed to Construction in Humber & West Yorkshire award.
