Creating a sustainable future – call for more employers to help reduce unemployment

Businesses in Hull and East Riding are being urged to attend a careers event hosted by Green Port Hull to find out more about offering job placements to fully trained candidates.

Since the launch of the Green Port Hull Pathways to Employment in January, Unity Training have been delivering a tailored work programme working closely with 20 trainees who have undertaken an intensive five-week training course, followed by a five-week work placement with businesses across the manufacturing, renewables and engineering sectors.

Now the team will be holding an event on Tuesday 15 March at Orchard Centre on Hall Road, where interested businesses can come along to find out more about how they can play their part in taking on a fully trained candidate for five weeks in order to give them the best chance possible of getting back on to the career ladder.

Councillor Martin Mancey, Portfolio Holder for Energy City with responsibility for employment, said:

As the Council works closely with companies including Siemens and Jobcentre Plus to deliver a revolutionary skills and training overhaul, we want the long-term unemployed people of Hull and the East Riding to be able to access a whole range of new career opportunities.

The Pathways to Employment Programme is an excellent opportunity for potential employers to host a short-term work trial when looking to recruit new candidates, whilst offering trainees the opportunity to develop their skills within this specific industry.

Businesses who take part in the Pathways to Employment programme and offer a five week placement to trained candidates can benefit from a number of incentives, including the opportunity to conduct a five-week long trial period with trainees accredited in IOSH Working Safely, First Aid, Fire Safety, Working at Heights and Manual Handling.

Bob Ferraby, Green Port Growth Programme’s Skills and Development Lead, said:

This is a brilliant way for businesses to put a potential employee to the test, and if they decide to take them on full-time a 20 per cent wage subsidy is offered to the business for the first 12 months of employment.

It is very encouraging to hear that one of the businesses partaking in the programme, Atlas, has already offered a full-time position to one of our candidates during his work placement, and we hope this trend continues.

The Pathways team are currently working hard behind the scenes with JobCentre Plus to asses a new cohort of potential trainees who are suitable for the programme, whilst inspiring the next generation of the city’s workforce so they can work towards a solid, long-term future in the manufacturing, renewables and engineering sectors.

Bob continued:

Moving forward, we aim to sign up another 20 candidates and we need the support of more employers for the success of the scheme.

We’re continually developing what we offer as a centre as we get a clearer understanding of what training is needed for specific jobs. It’s important we do this as there is a constant requirement both now and in the long term future for skilled workers.

The whole process is done without any cost or long-term commitment from the businesses involved.
