The renewables industry is an increasingly varied, forward-thinking and diverse sector. In recent years, Grimsby and the surrounding area has become a hub for the offshore wind sector, generating numerous local jobs and boosting the region’s economy. As a result of this continued growth, exciting career opportunities are opening up for local young people. Over the summer, Grimsby based Rotos 360 has led the way in encouraging the next generation of talent into the industry via its internship programme, welcoming two students from Lincolnshire’s Franklin College into the business.
Since its founding in 2013, Rotos 360 has been at the forefront of the latest technological innovation in turn-key solutions for onshore and offshore wind turbine blade inspection, preventive maintenance and repair technology.
Maisie Dixon and Owen Jones joined Rotos 360 for six weeks as part of the Coastal Energy Internship, funded by the Ogden Trust. The internship programme is designed to help students develop their STEM skills alongside the very important soft skills which help to deliver a meaningful project. Throughout the internship Maisie and Owen explored new materials for use in blade repair, whilst gaining in-depth knowledge about Rotos 360’s pioneering, forward thinking approach.
Owen Jones comments: “My overall experience with Rotos 360 was incredibly positive and I thoroughly enjoyed all of the tasks and opportunities that I was able to take part in.
I gained an expansive knowledge of the renewables industry and the different roles involved with the manufacturing and maintenance of wind turbines and the farms themselves. I found the subsea area particularly interesting.
Personally, the best experience for me was an exclusive tour around the subsea warehouse in Lowesoft as it gave me a greater insight into what the subsea area and jobs involve.”
Whilst with Rotos 360, Owen and Maisie believed their social and professional skills had grown hugely and they now have the confidence to approach people, speak on the phone and face a variety of challenges.
Owen continues: “My time with Rotos 360 has definitely influenced my ideas on a future career path and has opened my eyes into the new areas of the renewables industry that I was previously unaware of. A career in this dynamic industry has interested me greatly.”
As part of James Fisher and Sons plc, Rotos 360 is dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals looking for opportunities within the renewables industries. This includes playing an active role as a member of the Grimsby Renewables Partnership Group and attending regular recruitment fairs and RenewableUK networking events at local colleges around the county.
Sarah Lancaster, Business Development Manager comments: “We are incredibly passionate about harnessing the next generation of talent in the renewables industry. It was amazing to see how much Maisie and Owen have grown and benefitted from their summer internship with Rotos 360.
We are delighted with the insight it has given both students about the renewables industry and hope to support them further with their interest.”
