Production workers take on hiring role

Former amateur rugby league international Matthew Bower has caught the selectors' eyes again.

Former amateur rugby league international Matthew Bower has caught the selectors’ eyes again.

He has landed a job with Hull-based chemical manufacturer Nippon Gohsei after being chosen for the role by his future workmates.

Rob Scott, production manager, specialty products, said it was decided to give production team members responsibility for interviewing candidates for a vacancy.

Mr Scott said:

Effectively, Matthew was hired by the team he would be working with.

He came across clearly as a team player and they knew they would be able to work alongside him without any problems.

The 10-strong team at Nippon Gohsei’s speciality products business that he has joined is involved in the running of three production line at Marfleet Environmental Technology Park.
Matthew’s role as an extrusion operator involves turning the standard version of company’s world-leading food packaging product Soarnol into bespoke grades.

The former Hull FC Academy player, who is 28, represented Great Britain amateurs in South Africa in 2010, but has now retired from the game.

Matthew previously worked as a plumber for KWL Contracting for eight years:

This is completely different to what I’ve done before and a big learning curve.

But I had no hesitation in applying for the job. I had only heard good things about the company.

This cutting-edge, 60,000 sq ft Marfleet facility is centered on making higher grade Soarnol providing more specific grades for specialty products, supplied by the company’s Hull Saltend site, and its US and Japanese facilities.
