Findings from a recent networking event, organised by local Hull-based business Jelf Insurance Partnership, found that 95% of businesses surveyed believed they could be at risk of a cyber-attack.

The event saw specialists from C4DI, HBP Systems and DataIQ join Jelf to provide insight on disruptive technologies and the importance of using technology for business growth, as well as providing updates on the latest cyber risks and trends.

Richard Tuplin, Director at Jelf Insurance Partnership, who led the event, commented:

Awareness on the subject of cybercrime seems to be growing momentum. This is encouraging, as in reality the threat of a breach is always present. Cybercrime is one of the biggest risks for businesses of all sizes and Jelf Insurance Partnership works with a wide range of clients to provide advice, support and insurance cover to help them through this potential minefield. From malicious attacks shutting down servers to fraudulent activity and data theft, regardless of who is behind them and their motives, the threat is very real.

The audience, which brought together businesses from across the city, also considered technology a vital ingredient to their business, with 57% placing their focus on ‘Security Technology’.

Richard continued:

Companies are increasingly relying on technology in order to run their business, so it is perhaps unsurprising that over 90% said that they will be spending more on technology this year compared to last year.

However as part of this spend businesses need to consider how they will protect themselves. Just under half of our attendees rated their own cyber security arrangements as average or lower. Any organisation that operates via the internet, trades electronically with clients or holds client data, needs to consider how they will safeguard their business.

Concluding the day, Richard said:

Our event was a great success and a real eye opener for those attending. It was also valuable to us to understand the pressures on local businesses and learn how we can help support them better through the services we provide.
