Today the FairFuelUK Campaign sent an open letter to Chancellor George Osborne and his Treasury Ministers, Priti Patel MP and Danny Alexander MP, calling for an independent enquiry in the process of how petrol and diesel prices are set at the pumps.

This letter is backed by the RAC, RHA, FTA, APN, UKLPG, 1m campaign supporters and 146 MPs

Quentin Willson from FairFuelUK said:

“As well as asking the government to cut duty before the next election, we at FairFuelUK are asking for a truly independent enquiry into oil price manipulation and forecourt pricing. We did ask the OFT to look into this in 2013 and we presented a weighty petition at the OFT doors to prove there was significant public interest but the OFT reckoned there was no case to answer. Well, the last week has proved there’s still confusion and anger at the way fuel prices go up so quickly and fall so slowly and the industry either needs to explain this complicated market to us clearly or do the right thing and pass the falls in the price of crude oil to consumers much quicker than they do. Either way we need much more transparency.”

Howard Cox, founder of the FairFuelUK Campaign said:

“Following the negative publicity this week for retailers and oil companies by the Chancellor and the Chief Treasury Secretary and through our campaign, the retail market is now responding by dropping prices at the pumps. How strange? Where have these price cuts being hidden up until yesterday. Who was holding them back? Was it purely speculator profiteering? When oil prices change who is it making the decision to change pump prices by a penny or two? What criteria do they use and why is the process so secretive? In a nutshell why has it taken bad publicity to reduce prices at the pumps after all this time? It’s now time to expose this secretive pricing process for the good of the economy and 32m motorists”
