Julie brings lived experience to the role, having completed the charitable trust’s 12-week exercise referral programme, Active Forever, in 2025.
Referred on to the programme to help manage pain caused by a slipped disc, she now wants to help other people in similar situations by sharing her experiences.

Julie’s role involves meeting and greeting members for the first time and helping to support and reassure them.
“After retiring last year, I realised I needed something to get me out and about. I saw the volunteer programme advertised and thought I could help in some way.” Julie explained.
“When I first started in the Wellness Hub, it was nothing like I expected. It can be scary trying something new for the first time, so hopefully I can reassure people that it’s nothing to be nervous about.”
Volunteer Coordinator, Wayne Pendergast said: “Julie has already made a massive difference! She’s great with people and gives everyone a warm welcome, which goes a long way.
“Some members can be anxious about setting foot into a gym or fitness environment for the first time. Being greeted by a friendly face is invaluable. She’s been on the same journey and can offer an honest opinion on what to expect.”
Since volunteering, Julie has also recognised how her own social skills have developed by coming out of her comfort zone.
“I’m not usually one of making conversation. I’ve always been the one that will wait to be spoken to.” Julie reflected. “I’d talk to people at reception in my job at the hospital, but it was slightly different. Starting the conversation and making that first connection is bringing me out of my shell and helping build my confidence.” She added.
Keen to show his appreciation, Wayne concluded: “It’s great to see Julie thriving. She’s a great fit with the team and gives 110% effort. She’s very humble and although she doesn’t always realise it, she is making a massive difference. We’re grateful for her volunteering her time and energy.”
As the programme expands, Wayne hopes to offer further opportunities, such as supporting the charitable trust’s weight management programme, guest talks, networking events and training courses.
