It will receive £300,000 from the Libraries Improvement Fund from the DCMS, via the Arts Council, as well as £150,000 match funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
Improvement works are expected to begin in 2027 and will build on the legacy of the Goole Bicentenary. 2026 marks 200 years of England’s largest inland port, and there is an ongoing program of events and activities are underway to mark the town’s history and achievements. This includes events at Goole library, museum and other cultural venues.
Goole Library will be redesigned, including upgrades to fixtures and fittings, and the creation of new vibrant children’s areas and flexible spaces. There will also be a public consultation, to gather public feedback on the improvements.
It is hoped that the new approach will increase footfall to the library and provide more learning opportunities for the local community. It will also provide opportunities to encourage improved health and wellbeing.
Councillor Nick Coultish, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for culture, leisure, and tourism, said: “This is fantastic news for Goole library. It will bring huge benefits to the library, helping it to serve as an innovative and accessible community space.”
“This funding will play a key role in helping the library provide more services to local residents, and we look forward to the refurbishment getting underway. "
